Fireworks and the Fourth of July go hand in hand, but not everyone considers them a fun tradition. Whether you have a pet who’s terrified of the loud noises or kids who can’t stand the sound or have sensory issues, or they give you anxiety, there are a lot of reasons some folks would rather skip the fireworks altogether on the holiday.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to celebrate Independence Day that don’t include those big explosions in the sky. These family-friendly activities are fun and completely fireworks-free.

  • Look for shooting stars - Find a spot away from as much light pollution as possible and go stargazing.
  • Host a big barbecue - A backyard cookout with your favorite people is always a good time.
  • Plan a picnic at the park - Pack a lunch, spread out a blanket and let the kiddos have a water balloon fight.
  • Go bowling - You might even score a holiday special to save money on the outing.
  • Head to the beach - Spending the day swimming and soaking up the sun at the coast or a lake near you.
  • Make it a movie night - Hang up a white sheet in the backyard and use a projector or just bring your big bowl of popcorn to the couch and stream a movie with the family.
  • Go fishing - Even if you don’t catch anything, it’s a day of fun at the lake or river.
  • Turn the backyard into a mini water park - From Slip ‘N Slides to sprinklers, there are tons of ways to set up the yard to splash around and cool off.
  • Check out a parade - They’re usually early enough in the day that they’re over long before the first firework goes off.
  • Break out the sparklers - These don’t usually cause anxiety in kids or pets and they’re fun for kids.
  • Have a neighborhood party - Invite your neighbors over and let the little ones run around and use up some energy.
  • Go camping - Spend the night in nature, or just pitch a tent in the backyard.
